The third annual fundraising dance for leukaemia took place at The Dolmen Hotel in Carlow in July, and generated more than €3,200 for St. James’s. The dance took place on Tuesday, July 26th, and was attended by 320 enthusiastic and expert dancers from Carlow and neighbouring counties. The three dances have generated almost €20,000 for the leukaemia service at St. James’s Hospital.

The annual dance is organised by Mrs Peg Fortune, from Enniscorthy in Wexford, in memory of her friend and fellow dancing enthusiast, Mrs Mary Barry. Mrs Fortune is most grateful to all of her fellow dancers and to all of the dance bands and entertainers who gave their services at no cost: Checkers (Carmel and Larry Brown), Michael Collins & Band, Philip English and David O’Connor – RTE’s 2007 ‘You’re a Star’ winner and also Mrs Fortune’s nephew.

St. James’s is the largest single provider of cancer treatment in Ireland. The Haematology Department provides a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment service for haematology patients and also includes the National Adult Bone Marrow Transplantation centre that specialises in procedures for disorders that include chronic and acute leukaemia.
