A fantastically generous co-operation between the owner and staff of Scruples Urban Hair on Talbot Street was the basis for a wonderful fundraising initiative for St. James’s Hospital. Wednesday May 25th last saw the salon and staff donate their resources and creativity and services in return for donations to the hospital that amounted to €9,000 that has been given specially for the head and neck cancer service.
The initiative was prompted by a long-time member of staff of Scruples, Helen Poole, whose brother has been a patient of St. James’s, and she was supported most generously by the salon’s owner, Darryl Dowdall. May 25th saw all of the busy salon’s facilities and resources put at the disposal of the fundraiser with all revenue from client services reserved for the hospital. The salon staff all most generously worked for the day for no wage – adding their wages to the fund – and the salon also donated 25 cuts and blow-dries as raffle prizes with all ticket sales also added to the fund.
In addition to the current six members of staff who contributed to this great effort, former members of staff also came in to help for the day. Darryl Dowdall says that he was very pleased to support his long-time friend and colleague in her wish to contribute to St. James’s Hospital and is most grateful to all who supported the effort: “It was a great team effort and all of our clients – who all knew what we were doing – were really generous and seemed to enjoy the atmosphere. We are really grateful to everyone who contributed and are delighted with the result.”
The staff of Lotus Beauty & Holistic Sanctuary, located in the basement of Urban Hair Salon, washed hair and donated manicures in return for €5 donations on the day.
St. James’s is the largest single provider of cancer treatment in Ireland and selected as the largest national centre of radiotherapy service. A major new government funded Cancer Care Centre and Radiation Oncology Centre has now been equipped at the site and a facility for PET imaging for advanced patient diagnosis has been installed – the first such facility within a public hospital in Ireland.
