Generous response to Christmas appeal

10,000 people in Ireland suffer stroke each year and about one in five will suffer a stroke during their lifetime. Stroke is a medical emergency – it requires urgent treatment and immediate rehabilitation.

29 local companies, organisations and people have so far  responded most generously to the Christmas appeal for the hospital’s stroke service.  Given that so many people and other organisations were in great need by the end of last year, the hospital is deeply grateful to have received these donations. Since last summer €90,000 has been raised for the stroke service and the goal before this year-end is to have raised €250,000 in total for specialist facilities that will enable improved outcomes for the hospital’s patients.

St. James’s Hospital admits between 400 and 450 stroke patients annually from all over Ireland – more than is admitted to any other hospital in the state. Since 2006 the new stroke team at St. James’s has – without any additional resources – succeeded in reducing the mortality for stroke patients and in reducing patients’ length of stay. The hospital is now focused on supporting stroke patients by developing organised specialist care and aims to provide a service that will ensure outcomes consistent with best practice throughout the world. The stroke service needs many items – from a handgrip measure at €330 to a small gym room at €20,000 to a portable endoscope to measure patients’ ability to swallow at €30,000. All gifts given in connection with the service will ensure that stroke patients are afforded the best chance of – not just survival – but return to normal living.
