Niamh McDonnell and Yvette Canning, hair stylists from The Salon @ Barnhall in Leixlip, have presented funds in excess of €6,200 to St. James’s for the benefit of the cancer service. The funds represent the proceeds of a great fundraising effort carried out in the spring.

The generous girls recruited brave men to raise sponsorship for having their heads shaved and their chests waxed, and this was done before an enthusiastic crowd at The Palmerstown House on Saturday, February 26th. As well as the sponsorship raised by the brave volunteers, funds were also generated through a raffle that was most generously supported by the crowded house. The girls were so pleased with the outcome of their effort and so grateful to all those who had helped them; these included The Palmerstown House and so many local businesses who gave them raffle prizes and of course all of those who came on the night.

The funds were given in particular for the hospital’s Walter Stevenson Ward – an oncology and haematology ward where Niamh’s mother has been a patient. Karen Boyle, who is the nurse manager of the ward, said how grateful they were as always to have received the additional funds: “We use these donated funds for those extra things that we could never buy from the current hospital expenditure – those things that are nice to have for patients but not absolutely necessary.” Electric beds are what she said they really wanted for all patients now.

St. James’s is the largest single provider of cancer treatment in Ireland and selected as the largest national centre of radiotherapy service. A major new government funded Cancer Care Centre and Radiation Oncology Centre is now open on the site and a facility for PET imaging for advanced patient diagnosis has been installed – the first such facility within a public hospital in Ireland.
