2007 Christmas Tree Appeal

More than 70 businesses and local organisations generously supported the 2007 St. James’s Hospital Foundation Christmas Tree Appeal. All supporters of this annual appeal were recognised on a hoarding at the base of the hospital’s outdoor Christmas tree and all were named in the 2007 Foundation Annual Report.

On Monday December 10th 2007, the Foundation Board hosted a reception in honour of the hospital’s corporate supporters. Niamh Merriman, OT Manager at St. James’s, spoke of the work in the OT department that had been facilitated by donations during 2007.  Niamh told how it had been possible to enhance participation by elderly residents in leisure activities. They had initiated a “community integration project” to improve social participation, orientation and quality of life amongst their patients. Niamh described how the long-stay residents had “with much anticipation and excitement” chosen to visit the Dublin Horseshow, the seaside in Bray, and Croke Park. She also spoke about a gardening project, involving the designing of wheelchair accessible flower boxes and gardening groups, that had been funded by the Foundation. The success of this initiative had stimulated their department to aim to next create a gardening polytunnel which would provide a year round sensory garden on the hospital campus. She said: “This will provide an alternative context for patients, residents and families to interact, an opportunity to nurture their own patch of garden, and stimulate the senses of sight, smell and touch.”

Niamh thanked all those who had donated money to the hospital in 2006 and 2007 on behalf of all the staff in the OT department, and the patients and the families who have benefited from these meaningful projects.

Thanks to the generous response to the 2007 Christmas Tree appeal, €12,500 was raised in aid of research, education and the improvement of patient facilities at St. James’s.
