Niall Thorburn on the way to Kenmare

330-mile marathon for cancer research

We are in awe of Niall Thorburn – who ran 330 miles in 12 days and raised more than €22,000 for cancer research at St. James’s. Between August 28th and September 15th 2007, Niall ran a north-south route along the west coast of Ireland from Donegal to Kenmare. Attended by a support team of family and friends, he ran the equivalent of 12 marathons in 12 days – and, while doing so, he sought sponsorship along the route and from as far away as the United States.

Niall, whose mother is Irish, is from Henley-on-Thames outside London. He was motivated to his fundraising effort through personal family experience of cancer. His fundraising benefited both the Royal Marsden Hospital in London and St. James’s. Niall said: “Our family has had first hand experience of the tremendous work carried out by both hospitals. This was my attempt to contribute to their great causes by raising money for the fight against cancer.”
