Congratulations to Sheila Fitzpatrick - this year’s Alternative Miss Ireland!
Alternative Miss Ireland, founded in 1987, is a non-profit collective that is dedicated to raising money for Irish HIV/AIDS organisations. The 14th Alternative Miss Ireland Pageant took place on Sunday, March 16th 2008 at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin.
This was the second year running that St. James’s Hospital benefited from the Alternative Miss Ireland pageant. €15,000 had previously been donated for the benefit of HIV/Aids patients of St. James’s. Money donated to St. James’s by Alternative Miss Ireland will be used for the Newfill service, a facial restoration service that addresses the muscular collapse caused by the drugs formerly administered to combat HIV/Aids.
Mr Tonie Walsh, involved in Alternative Miss Ireland from the beginning, is the charities liaison. Sandra Delamere, the Nurse Specialist at St. James’s responsible for the Newfill programme, expressed the hospital’s deep gratitude to Tonie and his colleagues on the organising committee: “We know how much the Newfill service means for our patients and we cannot believe how lucky we have become in the last couple of years in getting donated funding to support us. We are deeply grateful for this generous support for our work.”
St. James’s Hospital is de facto the national centre for care of HIV/Aids patients. On behalf of all the staff and patients who will benefit greatly from their donations, St. James’s Hospital Foundation extends sincere thanks to Alternative Miss Ireland.
