Hospital Golf Classic

On Monday, May 18th 2009 22 teams, sponsored by generous organisations and individuals, took part in the 2009 hospital Golf Classic at Luttrellstown Castle Golf Cub in Castleknock. Thanks to these very good sports, who achieved remarkable scores in less than favourable conditions, the event net more than €28,000 for the benefit of Stroke patients at St. James’s.  

Following the competition the intrepid players gathered in the clubhouse for the dinner and prize giving. The team from Martinstown Stud, led by Owen McManus, took home the first prize with a most impressive score of 94. Each won a most generous prize of a fourball plus dinner for four at the Knightsbrook Hotel Spa & Golf Resort in Trim. Diageo’s team was second placed with 89 and Hospital Services Limited came third on 88. Thanks to most generous sponsors, the first eleven-placed teams won prizes.

Closest to the pin on the 4th was David Ferguson from Momentum Support who won a generous  €100 voucher for the lovely new Wild Goose Grill in Ranelagh, longest drive on the 9th was Liam Walsh from the Martinstown Stud team who won a fourball at St. Anne’s Golf Club on Bull Island, and closest to the pin on the 15th was Maria Knightly from the McKenna Engineering team who won a fourball at Mount Juliet. 

In April 2009, the Board of St. James’s Hospital Foundation agreed to focus on supporting the establishment of a really properly equipped Acute Stroke Unit and aims to raise €250,000 before the end of 2010.  Stroke is a huge health problem in Ireland – it is the third most common cause of death in the country and the leading cause of adult physical disability – but facilities for patients are underdeveloped and outcomes poor. The hospital is focused on addressing the problem by developing organised specialist care.
