The annual Biological Society Inaugural Ball took place on Friday, January 11th, and St. James's Hospital Consultant Anaesthetist, Dr Jeanne Moriarty was there presented with a cheque for €20,000 by the fifth year Trinity medical students. The cheque will fund refurbishment of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) waiting area at the hospital. Their generous donation represented funds raised at the 2007 Trinity Med Day, and was given to fund refurbishment of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) waiting are in the hospital.
Trinity Med day took place on Friday, November 2nd, 2007, and over 500 medical students took part in the day of fun and fundraising. The students took to the streets in the morning, making collections, and in the afternoon attended fun and games on campus at Trinity college. All funds raised at the event benefitted Trinity teaching hospital's, and most fortunately for St. James's Hospital, the ICU received a generous share of the proceeds.
Acutely ill patients are taken care of by the ICU and high dependency teams at St. James’s Hospital. 130 specialists, anaesthetists and nurses, take care of more than 1,000 patients every year. Thanks to the funds given by the medical students, the ICU waiting area will now be given a much-needed upgrade. The new waiting area will provide much-needed spaces for small group gatherings and confidential discussions and will provide an environment respectful of the needs of waiting and, in many cases, bereaved and grieving relatives.
Dr Jeanne Moriarty and her colleagues at the hospital are all deeply grateful to the students who have fundraised for the benefit of the ICU and congratulate Ms Siobhra O’Sullivan, Chair of the 2007 Med Day Committee, and all her colleagues for their successful efforts on behalf of St. James’s.
