On Sunday November 4th 2007 Elaine Toomey joined over 29,000 athletes in the Big Apple, when she took on the New York City Marathon in aid of St. James’s. Elaine, who comes from Bray, Co Wicklow, raised over €2,500 for St. James’s, while fulfilling this once-in-a-lifetime achievement.
Elaine said: “I decided to run the New York Marathon in aid of St. James’s because of my experience of its staff when my brother was a patient there a few years ago. I felt that while we hear a great deal about the fundraising of other Dublin hospitals, St. James’s doesn’t seem to get the recognition it deserves for the excellent care that it provides, particularly to patients suffering with cancer.”
The New York City Marathon, at over 40 kilometers in length, takes in all five boroughs of New York. Its route beginning in Staten Island, leading contestants through Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx to finish in Central Park in Manhattan.
Funds raised by Elaine will contribute to vital research and education projects at St. James’s as well as much needed staff and patient facilities. St. James’s Hospital Foundation would like to send Elaine our warmest congratulations on her outstanding achievement.
