Kildare teams Calverstown and Narraghmore show their support for St. James’s Hospital
Eóin McMahon from Calverstown, Kilcullen, Co Kildare, was bust for several months in 2009 raising funds for the benefit of cancer patients at St. James’s Hospital. He raised almost €5,000 in sponsorship for his participation in the Paris Half Marathon on March 8th and for organising a fundraising football match on April 17th.
Eóin’s wife was a patient of the hospital and it was on foot of their experience of St. James’s Hospital that he decided to raise funds. He raised €4,800 which has been ring-fenced for the benefit of the Haematology and Oncology Department.
The Paris Half Marathon is a 13.1 mile race, which takes its 20,000 participants around the city of Paris. Eóin finished this race in a time of under 1 hour 35. He said: “The conditions were cold and wet but I didn’t even notice until the race was finished. The atmosphere was amazing with music groups playing on every second corner and the beautiful scenery of Paris made it so enjoyable.”
Eóin aimed to maximise his fundraising for St. James’s by organising the football match on April 17th between local Kildare teams Calverstown and Narraghmore. “We thought it would be a good excuse for a ‘friendly’ match, great fun was had by all and I am thrilled with the numbers that turned out and the fundraising result” he said.
St. James’s Hospital Foundation would like congratulate Eóin on his half marathon and sincerely thank him for his wonderful fundraising effort.
