Trinity Med Day benefits Acute Stroke Service

Dr Joseph Harbison, Consultant Geriatrician (centre), with the Med Day Committee at the start of Med Day

The 6th annual Trinity Med Day took place on November 7th 2008 and, once again St. James's Hospital benefited from the fundraising efforts of the Trinity medical and nursing students. Funds raised during Med Day supported the Acute Stroke Service with the purchase of adjustable beds for stroke patients in the Acute Medical Admissions Unit. The special beds are designed to enable patients to balance when sitting up alone to eat and drink, and to facilitate staff in the safe and effective moving and handling of patients.

Dr Joseph Harbison, Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine, is most grateful for the students’ support and said how important an impact these beds can have: “St. James’s Hospital admits between 400 and 450 stroke patients annually from all over Ireland and each patient needs 24-hour high dependency care. These beds will really help us to take better care of these patients and undoubtedly improved outcomes will follow.”

Med Day took place in and around the Trinity College campus. Activities included street collections, a football tournament, a talent show and an auction.

The 2008 Med Day Committee were Danielle McCollum (Chairperson), Ailbhe McAllister (Secretary), Osmond Morris (Treasurer), Catherine Graham, Ursula McHugh, Marie Timlin and Bill Walsh.

St. James’s Hospital Foundation is very grateful to the Med Day Committee for their support and would like to warmly congratulate them on a very successful event.
