Mella Buckley and Emma Heggie

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. James’s Hospital will hold a fundraising ball at The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin on Saturday, May 26th coming. A drinks reception at 7 pm will be followed by dinner and dancing and revelry led by comedian, Eddie Naessens – all aimed at raising funds for the hospital’s lung cancer service.

This ball will be the second arranged by the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and highlights a fundraising drive led by Ronan Ryan, a cardiothoracic surgeon at St. James’s. His co-hosts and the ball’s principle organisers are advanced nurse practitioners in cardiothoracic surgery – Mella Buckley, Jenny Quinn and Emma Heggie and Jessica Humphrey and retired lung cancer co-ordinator, Rita Luddy and Dr Sarah Early, cardiothoracic specialist registrar. All reports about last year’s ball testify to a great fun night. The dress code for this year’s event will be black tie, and glamour and fun will be the order of the evening.

Eddie Naessens will be master of ceremonies for the evening and will generously provide his services at no cost. Known better as a comedian and actor, he is also known for having faced a serious form of cancer with stoicism and courage. He was a patient at St. James’s in recent years.

Tickets for the ball cost €100 each and are available by calling the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery on 01 410 3338 or 01 410 3535 or by e-mailing lungcancercharityball@gmail.com

St. James’s Hospital sees about 25% of Ireland’s lung cancer patients for diagnosis or treatment, and carries out almost half of all surgical resections (the principal form of treatment for lung cancer) each year. Lung cancer is the fourth most common form of cancer in Ireland, but the single most common cause of cancer death; over 90% of cases are linked with smoking.
