Trinity Medical and Nursing students donate €18,000 for stroke

€18,000 in funds raised at the 2009 Trinity Med Day has been very generously donated to St. James’s Hospital for the benefit of the hospital’s Stroke service. The presentation of Med Day funds to St. James’s took place on Friday, February 12th, at the 2010 Trinity Biosoc Inaugural Ball. In attendance was Miss Katie Walsh, Speech and Language Therapist, who received the cheque on behalf of the hospital. These funds will help purchase vital equipment for the management of dysphagia, a potentially life-threatening complication of stroke.

Trinity Med Day took place last year on Friday, November 6th and, as per tradition, the student body were out in force making street collections from the early hours. In total the students raised €50,000 – and St. James’s is most grateful to have received such a generous portion of these funds for the hospital’s stroke service.

St. James’s Hospital admits between 400 and 450 stroke patients annually from all over Ireland – more than is admitted to any other hospital in the state. The hospital is focused on supporting stroke patients by developing organised specialist care and, since 2006, has reduced the one month mortality from 18% to 11% and the average length of stay has been reduced by seven days. The hospital aims to fundraise €250,000 before the end of 2010 to provide a range of specialist facilities that will enable further improvements to the stroke service and ensure outcomes consistent with best practice throughout the world.
