Westmeath-Offaly family dance for cancer research

St. James’s Hospital has been very lucky to benefit from the generous fundraising efforts of an extended Westmeath - Offaly family, who organised a fundraising dance for the benefit of cancer research. The dance, which took place in The Grand Hotel, Moate, on December 3rd, raised €3,450, and was organised by Mr David Kelly, from Offaly, with the help of his wife Iris, from Westmeath, their daughters Davina and Leanne, Iris’s parents Mr Sean and Mrs Mary Daly and Iris’s brother, Cllr Paul Daly, to name a few.

300 tickets were sold for the event to family and friends in Westmeath and Offaly, which provided entertainment from music groups Montana and Wee 2 and from RTE’s ICE Star Search singer Miss Leah Buckley. Attendees also had the pleasure of watching, and taking part in, a number of dances in a wide range of styles – these included dances by Streamstown’s set dancers, Irish dancing, old time waltz, foxtrot, ballroom and even brush dancing! Mr Kelly also held a raffle on the evening to maximise funds raised – which was made possible only by the very kind support of local businesses in Westmeath and Offaly.

Mr Kelly’s father, now in very good health, was a patient at St. James’s last year. He had lung cancer. David said he enjoyed organising the event and had really wanted to do something to help the hospital: “My father received incredible treatment from all the staff, particularly in the Keith Shaw ward where he was a patient. People kept asking me why I thought of organising this dance –I just wanted to do something to give back.”
