Edward Halloran Bennett Ward
Edward Halloran Bennett ward is a dynamic, 25 bedded surgical ward. Our surgical specialities include upper gastrointestinal surgery, urological, breast and general surgery. We are a high intensity ward and act as a step down unit from the high dependency unit and intensive care unit. Our major clinical and research focus is in oesophageal and gastric cancers; St James’s hospital is the national referral centre for oesophageal and gastric cancers, which is our major research and clinical focus. Our highly skilled nurses look after many complex post-operative cases, with many of our patients enrolled in clinical trials.
On Bennetts ward we are a motivated, united, enthusiastic and hardworking team. Our nurses have undertaken targeted educational programs to ensure that our patients receive the highest level of up-to-the-minute nursing care. We aim at all times to deliver care in a manner that respects the uniqueness of each patient, taking time to understand each individual’s specific needs. Patient experience, patient safety and efficiency of patient care is paramount to our work, and something we as a team take great pride in.
Your journey through Bennett’s ward will be guided by two clinical nurse managers, Bernie Waterhouse and Stephanie Keating. Other valued team members that will be with you include staff nurses, student nurses, health care assistants, ward secretary as well as catering and cleaning staff.
Our nursing staff form an important part of an active multi-disciplinary team who strives to provide a holistic service, which is centered around both you, the patient, and your family. Bennetts ward nurses work very closely with clinical nurse specialists (CNS) in upper gastrointestinal surgery, pain, palliative care, stoma care, breast care, radiation, medical and psycho oncology, as well as with colleagues from physiotherapy, clinical nutrition, speech and language therapy, social work and occupational therapy, to ensure we provide high-quality, personalised, cohesive care to all our patients.
Our CNS in upper gastrointestinal surgery is Jenny Moore, she will meet you at your diagnosis, and she will act as a point of contact between those within the multi disciplinary team, throughout all stages of your cancer experience. She will offer support and information to both you and your family or carer, throughout your treatment. She can be contacted on 01-4162650.
In Bennett’s ward, we provide education for patients, families and carers to enable a safe and smooth discharge, ensuring all patients are adequately prepared post operatively to manage at home. We encourage you and your family to be actively involved in your care.
Our care for you extends beyond discharge and should you experience any early discharge complications, we are available at all times for you to call or contact to discuss all concerns and ensure an early, expediated solution.
All members of the Bennetts team take great pride from the privilage of looking after you during a very worrying time. We are available at all times during your illness to help smooth your way and to make the experience as gentle as possible.
