Coagulation Laboratory

What we do

The coagulation laboratory provides a testing service to inpatient and outpatient facilities and to general practitioners. It also provides a tertiary referral laboratory service to other specified agencies within Ireland. Coagulation tests are carried out for the investigation, diagnosis and monitoring of therapy in patients with bleeding and clotting disorders.

Sample Acceptance Criteria

Coagulation samples that are inadequately labelled, clotted, haemolysed, under-filled or over-filled are not suitable for analysis.

Please refer to the Laboratory Policies and Guidelines for GPs and External Users for sample and request form acceptance criteria.

Additional Testing

For add-on D-dimer and fibrinogen requests, samples should be less than 24 hours old.

If an add-on APTT or APTT Ratio is required, a fresh sample should be sent to the laboratory without delay.

Additional diagnostic tests such as factor assays, lupus anticoagulant, etc. performed in the National Coagulation Laboratory (NCL) may be requested on stored samples (if available) within one year.

Platelet Aggregation Studies must be performed on the day of collection and cannot be stored.

Contact the laboratory for further details.
