Cryobiology

Department in Depth

The Laboratory is a specialist processing facility in which we test, manipulate and cryopreserve (freeze) stem cells for transplant. Human peripheral blood and bone marrow stem cells are collected from the patient or donor for the purpose of stem cell rescue following high dose therapy i.e. autologous or allogeneic transplant. The stem cell products are clinical grade products (similar to a drug) being infused into the patient. Sterile (asceptic) working is required to maintain the integrity of the stem cell products and a high level of quality control and regulation is required on all aspects of processing, testing and reporting and this is called good manufacturing practice (GMP). Therefore the laboratory processing is based in a clean room GMP facility in the National Blood center (IBTS).
The Cryobiology laboratory is part of the Haematology Department within the laboratory medicine (LabMed) directorate. The Laboratory is a GMP tissue establishment and is licensed by the Irish Medicines Board.
