Radiation Oncology

What we do

Radiotherapy is the use of carefully measured doses of radiation to treat many conditions, most of which are cancers. The purpose is to destroy cancer cells while causing as little damage as possible to normal cells.

The Radiation Oncology department provides a consultation service for patients, predominantly from St. James’s Hospital but also from around the country, who may require radiotherapy treatment.

The department consists of:

  • Six consultants who are based in St. Luke’s Hospital but who attend cancer-specific multi-disciplinary meetings or clinics in St. James’s Hospital or the St Luke’s Radiation Oncology Centre at St James’ on a weekly basis.
  • Specialist Registrars
  • 12 in-patient beds
  • A Specialist Nurse based in the Radiotherapy Centre at St. James’s
  • A part-time St James’ Hospital secretary based in the Radiotherapy Centre at St. James’s
  • Three St Luke’s Hospital secretaries based in the Radiotherapy Centre at St. James’s

Each consultant specialises in the radiotherapy treatment of different cancers
