Respiratory Assessment Unit

GP Information

The Respiratory Assessment Unit provides a COPD Outreach Service for patients with exacerbations of COPD being treated by their GP in the community. The service provides an alternative to hospital admission by providing ‘hospital at home care’.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist or Specialist Physiotherapist will visit the patient at home for up to fourteen days, depending on the patients needs. Following the outreach visits, patients can avail of other services provided by the RAU e.g. pulmonary rehabilitation, self-management plans, extensive education package, referral to bone health clinic, smoking cessation support, long term oxygen assessments and ongoing telephone support. In addition a Respiratory Consultant OPD review will be arranged for the patient at the end of the episode of care.

The COPD Outreach service accepts referrals Monday – Thursday from 8am – 5pm.

Please telephone the RAU on 01 4103763 to discuss referral with a member of the RAU team. The RAU will then telephone the patient to obtain consent and arrange a visit.

The service is available weekdays from 9am to 5pm. We can be contacted at the address / telephone listed in Department overview.

Patients must reside in Dublin 2/6/8/10/12/20 for the home visit service.

Referrals are also accepted for our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme - an 8 week outpatient exercise and education programme for people with chronic lung disease who are functionally limited by breathlessness and suitable to partake in a group exercise class. Classes take place Monday and Thursday afternoon in the Physiotherapy Department of St James's Hospital and participants must attend both days.

Referrals are also accepted for oxygen assessment clinics and nurse / physiotherapist COPD/asthma review clinics.
