  • Abraham Colles Ward is for patients with primary trauma, patients who have been in an accident, as well as trauma patients referred from other units.

    It is a tertiary referral centre for complex hip revisions and periprosthetic fractures, patients requiring complex upper limb work, haemophilia patients, reconstruction of feet and ankle problems and patients with sports injuries.

  • The National Burns Unit is a purpose-built unit which provides a national service for patients over 14 years of age. It is located beside the Emergency Department, which facilitates quick and efficient transfer of patients. The unit has an operating theatre designated for burn surgery.

    Burn injury admissions vary in severity from minor to life-threatening. The National Burns Unit accepts both classifications, which may be referred to from emergency departments, GP practices and healthcare centres.

    The aim of the unit is to provide optimal care of the burn-injured patient, utilising the skills of a multidisciplinary team from the acute to the rehabilitative phase of burn injury. The multidisciplinary team in conjunction with the patient and their family, aims to preserve life and with equal importance; promote quality of life by maximising long-term physical, vocational and psychosocial functioning.

  • The Coronary Care Unit is for patients with cardiac conditions that require continuous monitoring and treatment. The majority of patients are admitted through our Emergency Department. A number of patients are also admitted via the Cardiac Catheterisation Lab following angioplasty or other specialised procedures. Following treatment, patients are then transferred to the cardiac ward as their condition improves.

  • George Frederic Handel Ward is a neurovascular rehabilitation ward. Admissions to this rehabilitation service is by direct transfers from MedEl acute wards or transfers from other wards within the hospital.

    Patients transferred for rehabilitation are assessed and treated by a multidisciplinary team that include detailed goal setting that is meaningful to the patient. All therapeutic services are provided either in the therapeutic suites situated on the first floor of MISA or are ward-based and are structured around the assessed care needs of each patient.  The length of stay here is subject to individual progress.

  • Haematology & Hepatology (H&H) Ward specialises in gastroenterology (with particular emphasis on patients with Hepatology conditions) and Haematology (with particular emphasis on patients with bleeding disorders, mainly Haemophilia A and B and Von Willebrands Disease).

    It is also has a day unit which is used for haematology and gastroenterology patients receiving intravenous therapy. There are two are negative pressure rooms for barrier nursing.

  • The Critical Care Unit at St James's hospital provides tertiary referral for advanced therapies and supporting a wide range of specialties.

    We care for patients who are critically ill and require specialist medical or surgical interventions and/or close monitoring. Patient care and treatment is under the supervision of a team of consultants in Intensive care medicine/Anaesthesiology in conjunction with the primary admitting team.

    The Critical Care Unit is run by a range of multi-professionals including Consultants, Fellows, non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHD's), Nurses, Clinical Nurse Managers, Clinical Facilitators, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapist, Dietician, Pharmacists, Social Worker, Clinical Engineering and other Support Services.

    The ICU is a 26 bedded unit with a combination of open plan beds and Isolation rooms.

  • Keith Shaw Unit is made up of Keith Shaw Ward and Keith Shaw ICU. It is a cardiac unit for both planned and emergency patients for cardiac surgery, e.g. coronary artery bypass grafts or valve surgery. All patients for planned surgery are seen in a pre-admission clinic led by the advanced nurse practioners, prior to their surgery.

Admissions to transitional care is by direct transfers from hospital wards for patients who have completed their acute phase of care and await long term care placement or discharge home with home care supports. Patients transferring to the transitional ward must have a structured discharge plan in place and a planned discharge date.

  • Mc Aleese Ward is part of Hollybrook Lodge, which is the hospital's long stay residential unit for the elderly.

    Hollybrook Lodge provides the older person, who due to physical, psychological or social circumstances, requires long term care with safe, effective, quality care in a ‘home from home’ environment. All residents cared for in Hollybrook Lodge have access to specialist medical and nursing care, a wide range of support therapies including physiotherapy, clinical nutrition, medical social work, speech and language therapy and specialist aged-care services and treatments including old age psychiatry, bone health, Memory Clinic etc.

  • Rialto Ward is a care of the older person ward which specialises in rehabilitation (falls/orthopaedic/stroke rehab etc.). Patients are transferred here from acute wards for intensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy under a multidisciplinary team. 

    This ward aims to assist patients to their most independent condition possible and enables safe and stress-free transition from the acute hospital setting to home or to a long term residential care facility, for both the patient and their family.

  • Robert Adams Ward specialises in the care of patients with various cardiovascular conditions and the procedures and investigations to diagnose these conditions. It includes the management of patients after procedures to treat the complications associated with cardiovascular conditions, such as; angiogram, angioplasty, myocardial infarction, pacemaker insertion, insertion of implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), etc. The ward also manages the care of patients requiring cardiothoracic procedures, which are performed by the surgical team. Patients are admitted to the ward both electively and via the Emergency Department in the hospital.

  • Robinson Ward is part of Hollybrook Lodge, which is the hospital's long stay residential unit for the elderly.

    Hollybrook Lodge provides the older person, who due to physical, psychological or social circumstances, requires long term care with safe, effective, quality care in a ‘home from home’ environment. All residents cared for in Hollybrook Lodge have access to specialist medical and nursing care, a wide range of support therapies including physiotherapy, clinical nutrition, medical social work, speech and language therapy and specialist aged-care services and treatments including old age psychiatry, bone health, Memory Clinic etc.

  • Ward A is a 28 bedded St James hospital ward based off site in St Lukes Hospital Rathgar. Ward A is located on the first floor in the main St Lukes hospital building. The ward is a transitional care unit providing care to various patient types on a case by case basis. Patients are transferred to Ward A directly from SJH once they are assessed and discussed with bed management SJH and the CNM / nurse in charge Ward A.
