Patient Experience

The Dublin South Central Mental Health Service is a public service run by the Health Service Executive (HSE). Its inpatient service is located in the Jonathan Swift Clinic (JSC) in St James’s Hospital.

Inpatient Service:

There are three inpatient wards in the Jonathan Swift Clinic: Fownes Ward, Beckett Ward and Connolly Norman Ward.

  • Dublin South Central Mental Health Service receives referrals primarily from GPs and from doctors in emergency departments.  There are five Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT’S) for Adult Psychiatry (ages 18-64 inclusive) covering three geographical sectors within the service.  CMHTs provide services to inpatient, out-patient, day hospitals and day services.

    Referrals:

    Referrals must come from a GP or another doctor at primary care level. 

    Urgent referrals

    Urgent referrals can be made through the Emergency Department.

     

  • You may need to be admitted to the hospital for some of your care. The acute psychiatric unit that serves the Dublin South Central Area is located in St James's Hospital and is called the Jonathan Swift Clinic.

    There are three inpatient wards in the Jonathan Swift Clinic; Fownes Ward (Acute Admission Unit), Becket Ward (Low Dependency Ward) and Conolly Norman Ward (Psychiatry of the older person).

  • Connolly Norman Ward is a dedicated acute admission unit for care of the elderly. It provides acute psychiatric facilities for patients over the age of 65 years. All admissions to Connolly Norman Unit are arranged through a member of the multidisciplinary team and approved by the consultant psychiatrist.

    Referral Criteria: Individuals who are aged 18 to 65 years of age with a severe, enduring mental illness who are homeless and require assertive outreach with links to South Dublin, West Wicklow and Kildare and who are not already linked in with a CMHT.
