In this examination, ultrasound is used as guidance for biopsies, drainage of fluid collections and cyst aspirations.
We generally ask patients to fast for 6-8 hours before a biopsy. However, for drainages and aspirations there is often no preparation needed. Please inform us at the time of booking if you are a diabetic or on regular medication.
Once the radiologist has explained the procedure he/she will then do a quick ultrasound scan to find the best location for the biopsy/drainage/cyst aspiration. Some local anaesthetic may then be used to numb the area of focus. The appropriate needle for the procedure is then advanced into the area.
Some patients do have some mild pain during/after the procedure. However, this is generally minimal.
The results will be sent to your referring doctor who will discuss the results with you.
