Patient Experience

The Oncology Service in St James’s Hospital provides a comprehensive service for patients with cancer. If you or a family member has a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of cancer, your plan of care will be discussed and a treatment plan will be agreed at a multidisciplinary meeting. The best available care is facilitated by the development of newer services, including molecular diagnostics, PET/CT scanning and on-site radiation therapy. The service aims to enhance the quality of life for patients and reduce cancer-related deaths by improving cancer therapies through research.

  • The Oncology Service provides inpatient and out-patient chemotherapy, non-surgical treatment for cancer and supportive care. Oncology consultants, registrars, nurse managers and their teams provide specialised services to patients with cancers.

You and your family members will also have access to a dedicated oncology nurse who can provide information and advice.

Chemotherapy is given as an out-patient service in the Haematology Oncology Day Care Ward (HODC) or as an inpatient service on Donal Hollywood Ward or Denis Burkitt Ward.

  • The Oncology Team includes consultants, registrars and senior house officers. The nursing team consists of clinical nurse managers, staff nurses, nurse specialists and health care attendants. The service is supported by a dedicated pharmacy team and administrative teams.
