Update on the management of acne

  • Acne, now recognised as a chronic skin disease, is the most common skin condition of adolescence
  • There are several interrelated components to its development which should be considered,
in addition to clinical severity, when deciding on treatment
  • Most cases involve the use of topical agents with or without systemic drugs; combination
therapy is more effective than monotherapy
  • Patient education is vital as maintenance therapy may be needed for months or years after
initial response in order to prevent relapse
