Active research programmes:
With recent rapid advances in technology we have made significant progress in understanding inherited predisposition to cancer and the prevalence of cancer predisposing mutations in the population. We now appreciate the role of germline and somatic genetics as drivers of cancer biology and we have experienced a rapid evolution in the availability of therapeutic targeting based on genetic information. Cancer predisposition mutations may determine a patients’ future additional cancer risk in addition to that of their family members.  We are working to establish a comprehensive biobank and accompanying deeply curated data repository from adult patients attending the cancer genetics service at St James’s Hospital. Through investigation into the drivers of germline adult cancer predisposition we will determine drivers of cancer risk in our population providing key opportunities for cancer prevention. In addition the data generated will enhance the understanding of cancer biology potential opportunities for therapeutic targeting. This investigation into adult cancer predisposition in our population providing a powerful tool to maximize opportunities for cancer prevention.
