Dr O'Connor trained in Dublin and Queensland, Australia and has specialist registration in both general internal medicine and intensive care medicine.

Dr O’Connor has a special interest in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, having completed a Masters in Clinical Education in NUI Galway. He is the education lead in the ICU and has published and presented medical education papers in local and international forums.
