Dr O’Donnell is a graduate of University College Dublin and a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He has trained both in Ireland and the UK. His PhD, a study of clinical, functional and radiological indicators of disease severity in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and their relationship with markers of airways inflammation, was completed in the University of Southampton.

In St James’s Hospital he manages a busy respiratory and internal medicine inpatient service and participates in the acute on-call rota. He provides an outpatient service for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as his main subspecialty interest, in addition to seeing patients with all other respiratory diseases.
