Dr O’Connell has been a respiratory physician at St James’s Hospital since 1996, with particular interest in rapid access, diagnosis and staging of lung cancer and suspected lung cancer. He introduced Ireland’s first endobronchial ultrasound service in 2007, helping to establish a large rapid access multidisciplinary lung cancer service with involvement of all relevant specialties/colleagues.
Originally a graduate of University College Dublin (UCD) in 1984, Dr O'Connell holds Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI), Doctorate in Medicine (MD) from UCD, and Associate Clinical Professorship from Trinity College Dublin. He has a strong track record in medical education, was director of the William Stokes Postgraduate Centre from 1999-2010 and is the current intern coordinator for Trinity.
He was clinical director of medicine at St James’s Hospital from 2014-2019 and is currently the Executive Medical Director for the hospital.
