just a minute

Please note: Patients must be 16 years or over to avail of this service.

The GP blood testing clinic is located off the main concourse of the hospital. Take the corridor to the left, just past the staircase.

  • Only General Practitioners who have been vetted and approved to access laboratory services at St James’s Hospital are permitted to refer patients to the Swiftqueue GP clinic at the hospital.
  • GPs without formal approval are not permitted to access laboratory systems at St James’s Hospital.   Unfortunately, the hospital is unable to tend to patients who present to our phlebotomy or specimen reception team, unless they attend from a pre-approved GP.
  • If the patient’s GP is associated with a different hospital other than St James’s Hospital, then the patient must attend the Swiftqueue services at that hospital.
  • This clinic is open from 7.30am to 12pm Monday - Friday (except public holidays).
  • Patients must bring their St James's Hospital Healthlink Lab Order Request form.
  • Patients should be advised by their GP if they need to attend fasting.
  • GP patients for oral GTT (Oral glucose tolerance test) should be fasting for 12 hours. This test takes two hours to complete.
  • Patients for fasting bloods e.g. blood glucose, should be fasting for 12 hours. Only water allowed.
  • Patients for fasting cholesterol/lipids, should be fasting 12-14 hours. Only water allowed.

Please note there are no services on public holidays.

We will continue to provide 10 emergency SwiftQueue Phlebotomy appointments each day for critical patients to attend for urgent phlebotomy services. These appointments will be accessed by GPs only and will require the Healthlink form and the clinical need for urgent bloods.

The Phlebotomy Service provides blood tests for all hospital inpatients, day care/day surgery patients and those attending outpatient clinics, including the Warfarin Clinic.

In addition, it supports the Emergency Department, the Haematology/Oncology Day Clinics and the Pre-operative Assessment Clinics. The department also provides a general practitioner (GP) phlebotomy service.

The Phlebotomy Department is part of the Laboratory Medicine (LabMed) Directorate.

    • Patients referred from their GP should arrive within 15 minutes of their appointment time and check in at the self-registration kiosk. Patients will be called in for their blood test at their appointment time.
    • Patients are advised not to attend earlier than fifteen minutes prior to their appointment time as they will not be seen earlier and it is important to avoid congestion in the clinic.
  • Patients referred by a GP must:

    • Book their appointment online, via SwiftQueue. Access is available here
    • Have a hard-copy request form with them; otherwise the procedure cannot take place. Photographs of forms will not be accepted.
  • The Phlebotomy Department is accredited to ISO 15189 as part the Laboratory’s quality management system.
