National Inpatient Experience Survey

1 September, 2021

The National Inpatient Experience Survey is taking place this September.

All patients aged 16 and over who spend 24 hours or more in a public acute hospital, and are discharged during the month of September will be invited to participate in this national survey. It is the largest survey of its kind in Ireland and offers patients the opportunity to share their experiences in hospital and tell us what improvements they believe are necessary.

Patients will have the opportunity to tell us about every aspect of their care, such as confidence and trust in hospital staff, care and treatment on the ward, the provision of information and support when leaving hospital, and the impact of COVID-19 on their care.

Responses to the survey will be used to improve hospital care in Ireland. All eligible patients will receive a postal invitation to participate in the survey at the end of October. The survey can be responded to online or by post.

The National Inpatient Experience Survey is a partnership between the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA), the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Department of Health. The HSE will respond to the results of the survey by developing quality improvement plans at national, hospital and hospital group levels. The results also inform national policy and HIQA’s monitoring programme.
