Professor Byrne is a consultant physician in general internal and geriatric medicine at St James’s Hospital. He holds an academic appointment as clinical associate professor in the Department of Medical Gerontology at Trinity College Dublin. He is a fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Edinburgh.
Professor Byrne was appointed as the clinical director for the Medicine and Emergency Directorate (MED) in 2019 and was the director of postgraduate education on the St James’s Hospital campus for the period 2017-2020. As the current regional programme director of the RCPI for Basic Specialist Training in general internal medicine, he oversees the professional development of medical senior house officers (SHOs) training across eleven hospitals in the Dublin Midland Hospital Group (DMHG) region and beyond.
He is additionally trained in the areas of falls and syncope, pharmaceutical medicine and nutrition and dietetics.
As a generalist, Professor Byrne’s clinical and research interests are broad but focus on the areas of acute medicine, health outcomes research, clinical nutrition and health service management.
