Dr Finnerty graduated from UCD School of Medicine in 2011. He completed SpR training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine in Ireland followed by fellowship training in the Royal Papworth Hospital Cambridge, UK; in Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and advanced mechanical circulatory support.
He was appointed as a consultant in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine in 2020 and is a senior clinical lecturer in Trinity College Dublin.
Dr Finnerty has an expanding portfolio of academic research that has been published in international, high impact, peer reviewed journals. His research interests include perioperative outcomes in patients undergoing major surgery and the impact of anaesthetic drugs and techniques on cancer recurrence in patients undergoing cancer surgery.
He has received numerous awards and grants for his clinical research to date from both national and European societies. Dr Finnerty was lead author on two recent high impact clinical trials investigating the role of regional anaesthesia techniques in patients undergoing major surgery.
