Professor Norris is a consultant hepatologist/ gastroenterologist and is professor in gastroenterology and hepatology at Trinity College Dublin.

A graduate of University College Dublin, she trained in hepatology at the National Liver Transplant Centre at St Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin, and the Institute of Liver Studies at King's College Hospital, London, gaining a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in 1999. In 2000, she was appointed consultant in viral hepatitis and liver transplantation at King’s College Hospital.

In 2002, Professor Norris returned as consultant hepatologist and senior lecturer at St James's Hospital/ Trinity College Dublin, and was subsequently appointed professor in gastroenterology and hepatology in 2008 at Trinity College Dublin.
