Patient Experience
The Histopathology & Cytopathology Laboratory is part of the LabMed Directorate at St James's Hospital and is one of the largest histology laboratories in the Republic of Ireland, providing a comprehensive service to the hospital itself as well as to many outside institutions, general practitioners & dentists and other hospitals nationwide.
The department offers several excellent diagnostic facilities including automated immunohistochemistry, FISH and molecular diagnostics.
The Histopathology & Cytopathology Department deals with the microscopic examination of tissue and cells in order to study the manifestation of disease. St James's Hospital is a major cancer centre and the histopathology department, in SJH, is a major stake holder in oncology patient care, largely supporting the clinicians in the diagnosis and prognosis of disease and helping to guide the therapeutic pathway of the patient.
In 2019 the department received 65,000 specimens for processing, by its team of Medical Scientists and Laboratory Aides and reporting by twelve specialist Consultant Pathologists. The Consultants offer specialist led pathology services in oncology diagnostics for the Gynaecological, Gastrointestinal, Breast, Pulmonary, Haematological, Genitourinary, Dermatology and ENT teams.
