The Oncology Service in St James’s Hospital provides a comprehensive service for patients with cancer. If you or a family member has a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of cancer, your plan of care will be discussed and a treatment plan will be agreed at a multidisciplinary meeting. The best available care is facilitated by the development of newer services, including molecular diagnostics, PET/CT scanning and on site radiation therapy. The service aims to enhance the quality of life for patients and reduce cancer-related deaths by improving cancer therapies through research.
The Medical Oncology Service at St James's Hospital is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients with cancer. This service specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and management of cancer using systemic anti cancer therapies(SACT) such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and hormone therapy. SACT is administered both as a day case and for inpatients, ensuring tailored care. Treatment is delivered in specialised areas including the Haematology Oncology Day Centre (HODC), Donal Hollywood ward and Private One.
The team is made up of highly skilled medical oncologists, nurses and support staff who work closely with patients to create personalised treatment plans tailored to their specific type and stage of cancer. The service is part of a multidisciplinary approach, collaborating with other departments like radiation oncology, surgical oncology, pathology and radiology to ensure holistic care.
The Oncology Service provides inpatient and outpatient systemic anti cancer therapy (SACT), non-surgical treatment for cancer and supportive care. Oncology consultants, registrars, nurse managers and their teams provide specialised services to patients with cancers.
