The Renal Unit provides:

  • Outpatient nephrology clinics for all forms of kidney disease (including those with reduced kidney function and acute kidney injury (AKI)
  • Specialist renal clinics for hypertension, diabetes and SLE.
  • An acute haemodialysis service for inpatients in St James’s Hospital (on chronic dialysis as well as those with AKI)
  • A consultative nephrology service for St James’s Hospital
  • Anaemia management (both intravenous iron & erythropoietin (EPO))
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD), dialysis and transplantation education  
  • Pre-emptive arteriovenous (AV) fistula work-up and construction
  • Temporary and semi-permanent tunnelled vascular access for dialysis
  • Native and transplant renal biopsies
  • Renal transplant work up and subsequent transplant follow up.
