Professor Mellotte is consultant nephrologist at St James's Hospital and Tallaght University Hospital, Dublin since 1995.
He is currently the national clinical lead for renal services and clinical director of the National Renal Office, HSE. He served as clinical lead nephrologist for the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group prior to taking up this role. He is clinical professor in nephrology, School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin.
Professor Mellotte has led clinical services on both St James's and Tallaght University Hospital sites, overseeing a significant expansion of services, including home therapies and satellite dialysis centres
A graduate of the National University of Ireland, Galway, Professor Mellotte trained in nephrology in Dublin and London. He holds an MSc in Biochemistry from King's College London, University of London.
Professor Mellotte’s research interest is in peritoneal dialysis and he has published widely on this and other related topics.
