Patient Experience
The National Coagulation Centre (NCC) offers a service to patients with a wide range of bleeding and clotting disorders on an inpatient and outpatient basis, including investigation, diagnosis, long-term management and family screening.
The NCC provides comprehensive care with a multidisciplinary approach involving nursing, physiotherapy, social work, clinical psychology and dentistry. In addition, it runs specialist combined clinics in orthopaedic surgery and infectious diseases.
There is 24 hour cover by a Consultant Haematologist covering the Coagulation Service in St James’s Hospital.

Our Haemostasis and Thrombosis Clinics are held every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and in these clinics we review return and new patients referred to our service.

All referrals are triaged by the consultant within 10 working days of receipt. Triaged referrals are categorised as either urgent or routine. The patient will be contacted with an appointment letter and a map of our exact location.
All clinics are consultant-led.
Referral letter must include contact details for all patients along with any investigations, scans, blood results and relevant correspondence.
Rescheduled or cancelled appointments can be arranged by contacting us.
Patient referral letters can be sent via Healthlink, post or email.

We only accept self referrals from patients who have a family member registered in the NCC with a history of

- HHT
- Protein S, C or Antithrombin deficiency

Telehealth - COVID-19 has changed how we manage our service. We have now set up both telephone and video consultations to ensure that we continue to give our patients the best service possible.
To shine a light on the journey experienced by young people when they transfer their care from a paediatric (children’s) hospital to an adult hospital, the National Coagulation Centre (NCC) at St James’s Hospital and Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) created the below short video.
In this video, David recalls his transition of care from CHI Crumlin to the NCC and explains how he overcame his anxieties from meeting with his consultant alone to finding a mode of transport to get to his appointment. David was encouraged to build and grow in all aspects of his life, both in and out of hospital. The NCC encourages young adults to develop their skills for self-management, empowering them to set their own personal goals and, importantly, achieve them.
