Statement from St James’s Hospital Board

24 June, 2022

The board of St James’s Hospital can confirm that the CEO of the hospital, Professor Mary Day, is being seconded to the HSE as the interim National Director of Acute Operations for a period of 12 months.

Prof. Day has been the CEO at St James’s Hospital for two years, joining the largest adult acute teaching hospital in the country in the midst of the Covid pandemic in 2020.

The chair of the St James’s Hospital Board, Catherine Mullarkey said: “This is a testament to the leadership of Mary Day which she has ably demonstrated here at St James’s Hospital during one of the biggest health crises the world has ever seen.”

“Mary will no doubt bring her strategic vision for healthcare in Ireland and tireless dedication to public service to the role of interim National Director of Acute Operations in the HSE at a challenging, but crucial time for health.”

“We are very sorry to say goodbye to Mary, but look forward to welcoming her back to St James’s Hospital at the end of her secondment.”

The Board of the hospital has restated its intention to ensure the ambition to develop the St James’s Hospital into an Academic Health Science Campus is fostered and supported.

Mary Day will step down from her role as CEO later in the summer to take up the HSE position. St James’s Hospital Board will appoint an interim CEO shortly.

Prof. Day said: “This is a bittersweet moment for me, as I have relished the opportunity to shape the strategic direction and priorities of St James’s Hospital during my time here. We now have a blueprint to develop the hospital over the next five years to ensure it is capable of fulfilling its potential and providing world class care to the patients we treat.”

“At the heart of this plan is the vision for Ireland’s first Academic Health Science Centre at St James’s Hospital, bringing education, research and innovation straight to the bedside of the patient to improve their health and their outcomes.”

“I know the team here at St James’s will be progressing that ambition, and I would like to thank every member of staff for their dedication and hard work during an exceptionally challenging time for health and acute hospitals in particular throughout the pandemic.”
