A momentous milestone for the Furlong family!

1 August, 2025

Today is a momentous day for the Furlong family. It is one year since Gerard (Gerry) Furlong underwent CAR-T therapy, a cell therapy treatment for lymphoma.

Gerry was diagnosed with cancer three times and underwent various treatments. When all treatment options were exhausted, Gerry was put forward for CAR-T therapy.

Gerry is doing well since his treatment, and yesterday he returned to the hospital with his family to present the Burkitt Ward with a painting for patients, visitors, and staff to enjoy.

Gerry spotted the painting while eating in a restaurant, and for him, it symbolised hope and new beginnings. He purchased the painting and donated it to the hospital “to bring sunshine into the ward.”

Gerry’s wife, Noreen, spoke about how the family’s perspective on life has changed: “You take less for granted,” she said. “CAR-T has been a literal lifesaver, she continued. “We are so grateful for the opportunity to avail of it.”

Gerry’s son Paul attended the presentation with his daughter Esmeé, Gerry’s granddaughter. He spoke of the extension of life his father has been given and how his dad has a renewed energy for doing the things he loves. “He’s around to spend time with his grandkids.”

Esmeé’s love for her granddad shines through: “I am so happy the hospital could make my grandad better because not everyone gets better.”

Gerry has spent a lot of time in hospital. “I am so grateful to everyone - the medics, nurses, catering staff, security- everyone! They have all been amazing, and they all have so much time for you. It's one big family.”

The hospital would like to thank Gerry and his wider family for their generosity and for letting us share their story.
