We are delighted to welcome a delegation from the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre to the Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute (TSJCI) from 8th-11th September as part of the Erasmus+ programme.  This four-day visit presents a valuable opportunity for mutual learning and exchange.

The visiting team from the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre comprises of professionals in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and research, each bringing a wealth of expertise to this collaborative exchange.  Their primary objective is to gain a comprehensive understanding of how TSJCI functions as Ireland’s first Comprehensive Cancer Centre, with a particular interest in its integrated, patient-centred approach to cancer care and research.

During their four-day visit, the delegation will engage closely with TSJCI teams across Oncology, Haematology, Breast Care, Cancer Clinical Trials, and Research, observing clinical practices, multidisciplinary collaboration, and innovation in cancer delivery.  A key focus will be the chemotherapy pathway, where they will explore how Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute ensures safety, efficiency, and quality throughout the patient journey – from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up.  This exchange is designed not only to share operational insights but also to foster learning that can inform quality improvement initiatives and policy development.  It represents a meaningful opportunity to reflect on best practices, strengthen professional networks, and advance excellence in cancer care across borders.

This visit is not only a recognition of TSJCI’s leadership in integrated cancer care, but also a chance to share our experiences, innovations, and learning outcomes to support quality improvement.

Speaking about the visit Dr Maria Victoria Caruana, Quality Assurance Manager, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre stated ‘As part of the Erasmus+ programme a team from the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre (SAMOC) will be undertaking a job-shadowing visit at Trinity St. James’s Cancer Institute. This collaboration represents an important opportunity to exchange knowledge strengthen quality practices and support the development of research within oncology services at SAMOC which is still in its initial stages. The main objective of the visit is to gain insights into how a leading cancer institute embeds quality management into its daily operations while also advancing research through structured programmes and initiatives. The team aims to learn how quality improvement projects are implemented and sustained and how research can be gradually developed alongside clinical practice.

A key focus will be on understanding how audits and feedback mechanisms contribute to patient centred care and continuous improvement. Through this experience the team hopes to explore ways of enhancing collaboration between clinical administrative and quality teams to streamline processes improve efficiency and lay the groundwork for strengthening research capacity. The knowledge gained will be invaluable in supporting ongoing quality initiatives and building a foundation for research at SAMOC ensuring that patients continue to receive the highest standard of oncology care. This exchange reflects a shared commitment to excellence and research in cancer care and the team looks forward to learning sharing experiences and building stronger cross institutional collaboration.’
