TSJCI Welcomes Dr Carolyn Lineen, Consultant Medical Oncologist Specialising in Breast Cancer

Dr Carolyn Lineen joins TSJCI as a Consultant Medical Oncologist with a focus on breast cancer. In her new role, she is driving innovation in patient care, streamlining treatment pathways, improving access to cutting-edge therapies, and expanding the clinical trial portfolio to offer patients more opportunities for advanced treatment options. Her work reflects a commitment to excellence and collaboration, ensuring patients receive the highest standard of care

What is the primary purpose of the role?

I am a newly appointed medical oncologist specialising in breast cancer at St James’s hospital, dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care. I develop individualized treatment plans using chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, and work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure each patient receives the most effective and coordinated care.

What responsibilities will be involved?

The responsibilities of the role include to guide patients through every stage of their cancer journey, from diagnosis and treatment to survivorship, while managing side effects, offering access to clinical trials, and supporting overall quality of life. I am also responsible for teaching junior doctors and medical students the art of oncology.

What relevant skills or experience do you bring - for example, expertise in developing major research projects?

I received my medical degree from University College Dublin and postgraduate master’s degree in clinical trials from University College Cork. I completed higher specialty training in medical oncology with the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland before completing subspeciality training in developmental therapeutics/ clinical trials and breast cancer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago. My time spent in Chicago was a valuable experience, as I gained skills in clinical research and clinical trial development as well as learning from experts in the field of breast oncology.

How will this role contribute to the TSJCI programme?

Expanding on care in breast cancer in Ireland’s only Comprehensive Cancer Centre is central to TSJCI’s mission. I aim to expand, enhance and promote clinical care and existing patient care pathways as well as expand the existing clinical trial portfolio for breast cancer patients of St James’s hospital.
