The Trinity St James's Cancer Institute (TSJCI) IS pleased to announce that it has been designated a Comprehensive Cancer Centre with Research Excellence by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI). The OECI now recognises cancer centres through three levels of designation: Cancer Centre (CC), Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC), and Comprehensive Cancer Centre with Research Excellence.
The designation recognises the Institute's outstanding commitment to cancer research and its success in translating scientific discovery into meaningful improvements in patient care. It reflects the strength and impact of research taking place across TSJCI, from laboratory-based discovery science to clinical trials and population health research. It acknowledges the work of our multidisciplinary teams, including researchers, clinicians, nurses, allied health professionals and patient partners, whose collaborative efforts are advancing knowledge and improving outcomes for people affected by cancer.
The achievement also highlights the close partnership between Trinity College Dublin, St James's Hospital, and the St Luke's Radiation Oncology Network, which together provide a unique environment for innovation, education, research and research-led care.
This important milestone reinforces TSJCI's commitment to driving progress in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. Through national and international collaborations, investment in emerging research talent, and a strong focus on translating research into practice, the Institute continues to shape the future of cancer care in Ireland and beyond. The OECI Research Excellence designation is both a recognition of achievements to date and an endorsement of TSJCI's ambition to remain at the forefront of cancer research and innovation.
"Research excellence is about turning discovery into impact. This designation recognises the dedication of our researchers, clinicians and patients who contribute to research every day, and it strengthens our commitment to improving outcomes for people affected by cancer through world-class research and innovation." Prof. Lorraine O’Driscoll, Research Director, Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute.
"For patients, this designation provides assurance that they are receiving care in a centre where research, innovation and clinical excellence are closely integrated. It reflects our commitment to ensuring that new discoveries translate into better treatments, improved outcomes and enhanced quality of life for people affected by cancer." Prof Gerry Hanna, Academic Director (interim), Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute.
