Dr Armstrong completed Higher Specialist Training in Ireland, following which he undertook a two year post as Clinical Lecturer in the School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. During this time he wrote an MD thesis evaluating cytokine expression and immune reconstitution after allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
He then travelled to the UK for a clinical fellowship in transplant and acute leukaemia at Europe's largest haematology and stem cell transplant centre, University College London Hospital.
