Professor Cunningham has been working as a consultant geriatrician at St James’s Hospital since October, 2000.
Graduated from University College cork 1991.
Completed basic and specialist training in Dublin, Newcastle, United Kingdom and was admitted to the specialist register of general (internal) medicine and geriatric medicine in 2001.
Professor Cunningham completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) thesis in the field of alzheimer’s disease, dementia and oestrogen while working as a research fellow at the Mercer’s Institute for Research in Ageing between 1996 and 1999. He was appointed a senior lecturer in 2006 and clinical associate professor at Trinity College Dublin in 2018.
Professor Cunningham continues to be active in research in the areas of malnutrition, frailty, rehabilitation and falls and has published over 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
