Dr Langan qualified from Trinity College Dublin and trained in clinical neurophysiology and neurology in Ireland and the UK; London and Newcastle upon Tyne. Following her training she worked as a consultant neurologist in Newcastle where she was heavily involved in teaching and ran the Undergraduate Neurology Programme in the Northumbria base unit of Newcastle Medical School.

Dr Langan has a special interest in epilepsy and spent three years in the Department of Clinical and Experimental Epileptology at the Institute of Neurology in London where she was involved in research into mortality in epilepsy, which remains a significant research interest.

She continues her teaching interest with weekly NCHD (Non-Consultant Hospital Doctor) teaching sessions.
