Patient Experience

Please note patients who book/arrive with GP request forms will NOT be facilitated at OPD blood.  This is for St James’s Consultant bloods ONLY.

The Outpatient Phlebotomy Department is located in the main Outpatient Department (OPD), Route 1. This phlebotomy clinic is for public patients who are referred by their St James’s Hospital consultant for blood tests. The tests are ordered electronically in the hospital by your consultant and the clinical team.

When you attend, please bring your yellow card with your Medical Registration Number (MRN) on it.

The Out Patients Phlebotomy Department opening hours are as follows:

Monday – Friday 7.30 am – 16.30 pm.

Closed Saturday /Sunday and BH.

This clinic is by appointment only and walk-in patients can no longer be accommodated. This system replaces the previous ticket system where patients would take a ticket in the waiting area and would wait to be called by the phlebotomist. The appointment system will now be via the SwiftQueue system.

There are two pathways into this clinic:

  • Patients attending for regular blood tests that have been ordered by their clinical team can book online via SwiftQueue and attend within 15 minutes of their appointment time.

Patients attending a clinic where there is an electronic request for blood tests ordered during the consultation can then book online at the kiosk outside the Phlebotomy Clinic. If there is a convenient time available for that day, patients can go away and come back within 15 minutes of their appointment time. If there is no suitable time, patients can go home and book via SwiftQueue at a time and day that suits them.
