A DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) or DXA scan measures bone density. It looks at the strength of your bones and your risk of breaking a bone. 

It is an appropriate test for adults, if directed by your doctor, regardless of your gender or age. 

  • To access this service patients require:

    • a doctor's referral from within the hospital, or
    • a referral from your GP, or
    • be referred from our Bone Health Clinic.
  • Your results will be sent to the doctor that referred you for the scan within 5 – 7 working days.

    If your GP did not send you for the scan then they will not automatically receive the results.

  • Referrals can be sent via Healthlink or by letter to:

    St. James’s Hospital
    Dublin 8

  • It is advised to wear comfortable clothing without zippers, buttons or other metallic objects - alternatively a hospital gown will be provided for you to change into. No other preparation is necessary for this scan.

  • You will be asked to lie on your back for three scans. The scan will take approximately 20 minutes altogether.
