Patient Experience

The Orthodontic and Prosthodontic Unit acts as a tertiary referral service in St James's Hospital for orthodontics (fixed braces) and prosthodontics (implants or bridges).

As part of the Dublin Cleft and Craniofacial Centre we are committed to delivering high-quality multidisciplinary care for children, adults and their families requiring treatment for cleft lip and/or palate and other craniofacial conditions.

The multidisciplinary team aims to work with you and your child, linking in with the specialties at the appropriate times to meet your individual care needs.

  • The Cleft Orthodontic and Prosthodontic Unit acts as a tertiary referral centre providing coordinated interdisciplinary care for patients with cleft lip and/or palate and other craniofacial conditions.

    Multidisciplinary jaw surgery and implant clinics are held with the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery. The Department runs a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic twice a month to facilitate collaborative care planning with the Cleft Team. There are well established clinical links with paediatrics services in Children's Health Ireland, Crumlin and Children's Health Ireland, Temple Street, all working closely with your local healthcare teams.

  • Child referrals
    New baby or antenatal mother and children transferring into the service up to the age of 15 years: Referrals to the cleft services in CHI Crumlin or CHI Temple Street.

    Adult referrals
    If you are an adult wishing to have further assessment or treatment by the cleft team, please ask your GP or dentist to write to us.

    New Patients
    GP letters should be sent to the relevant consultant via Healthlink or by post to the relevant consultant.

    Referrals should include:

    • Date of referral
    • Patient name, address, date of birth
    • Contact phone number and email address where available
    • Brief medical history and current condition.
    • Please include current GP details if not referring through GP service
